Beating the Instagram algorithms is all the rage right now. It’s a hot topic and there are thousands of articles and blog posts on this, but I wanted to share some of my personal experiences & lessons learned with you.
To give you some context, I started at about 500 followers in April, 2018. Fast forward 9 months, and I’m currently at about 6,500 followers with really high engagement, which is c r a z y, because the first goal that I set for myself in April for the end of 2018 was 1,000 followers.
Top Tip #1: E N G A G E .
I mean it. Sounds like a “duh” tip, but I’m always surprised at how many accounts I see not engaging back with their followers. If you want to grow your following, you have to value the community you’ve already built. Those people are your foundation. They’re the OGs, the true fans who liked you & your content before you were cool.
And when I say engage back, I mean genuinely engage with them. No, you don’t have to become BFFs with every single person who follows you (that would be unrealistic), BUT make what you do count.
I won’t sugarcoat it. This becomes more time-consuming the more your community grows, but I still do my best to respond to every single comment and message I receive (other than the creepy ones). Yes, it takes time, but my goal isn’t to just “get more followers.” It’s to build a community of like-minded individuals who I value and want to spend time with.
Tip #2: You Get What You Give.
Social media can seem very competitive, but as with all things in life, I firmly believe: “A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it. It just blooms.” – Zen Shin.
I love to openly share all the ideas, strategies, and tools I use. I’ve always been that girl who is flattered & humbled that the girl next to me is wearing the same dress as me, not the girl who’s offended. Being open and giving with what has worked for me from the very beginning has come back to me tenfold.

Tip #3: Do The Work.
If you aren’t blogging or trying to build a business or presence on social media, you probably don’t know the amount of hard work, time, creativity, drive, and consistency it takes. It’s. Hard. Work.
The good news and the rule I live by is THE 1% RULE:
You don’t need to be the best. “You just need to be slightly better.” – James Clear.
So put in that extra 10 minutes a day doing some research, listen to a podcast or YouTube video while you do the dishes or get ready in the mornings, take an extra 2 minutes to proofread your caption before you post it.
It’s the small things you do daily that will add up. Trust yourself, do the work, and the rest will come.
