This is a LONG one.  I generally like to keep my blog posts at around 500 words; this one’s about 1300, but when I put the poll up on Instagram, more of you said you’d want to read this than not, so you’ve been warned~

If you watched my Instagram stories when I was applying 5 weeks ago, you’ll know that going into this, I was expecting some basic “give us your social media stats & tell us why you love Sephora,” BUT NO.  This app legit took me over 3 hours to do and after lots of reflection and tears…  I finally came up with this.

(I deleted some of the Sephora specific questions/answers in an effort to save you time and also to stay true to my purpose in sharing these thoughts with you in the first place.)


“WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A
#SEPHORASQUAD INFLUENCER?”

I would love to be a #SephoraSquad influencer because I have built a very strong community of women who trust and value my opinions and feedback on the passions I share, specifically related to beauty and style.  Being a #SephoraSquad influencer would increase my ability to share my beauty truths on more products with more resources.  I think my current platform would also help give higher exposure to newer brands and trends – things that I always love to try and share feedback on.

My biggest reason for being a blogger/influencer is to inspire women to create a life they love, or on our worst days, to at least look good doing it.  Living through my fair share of ups and downs, I firmly believe that if you look good, you feel good, and therefore, have the confidence and motivation to pursue your dream life.  With as much time and work as I have put into creating content and sharing my voice, I never expected to receive it all back tenfold in the form of joy and fulfillment.  I have received more camaraderie and support than I could ever have imagined, and I would love to share this light as part of the #SephoraSquad.


“TELL US ABOUT YOUR HUSTLE.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS AN INFLUENCER?”

I have been casually posting my makeup + hair tips and outfits on Instagram for almost 10 years now.  Throughout that time, I have also been actively pursuing my career as a full-time corporate attorney, and for too long, limited myself with my own belief that I could not be both an attorney and an influencer (where some of my strongest passions lie).  After friends and acquaintances continued to urge me to give it a shot, and after many heartfelt conversations with my closest friends and confidants, I took the leap, and it has been one of the single greatest decisions I have ever made in my life.

From that point on, I have been hustling day and night – from the moment I wake up to the many moments before I actually fall asleep.  I work 7 days a week, around the clock, as an influencer, when I’m not billing every 6 minutes as an attorney or taking a mental health day.  Almost all of my days are filled with brainstorming ideas, finding inspiration, bringing visions alive, and most importantly – sharing experiences and life with like-minded women from all around the world.


WHAT VOID DO YOU FILL IN THE CURRENT INFLUENCER LANDSCAPE?  TELL US HOW YOUR CONTENT OR THE PERSPECTIVE YOU PROVIDE SETS YOU APART.

People are always talking about how saturated the influencer landscape is, and you could definitely see it that way; however, being an influencer, for me, is just living my life the way I want to live it, and I am the only person in the entire universe who is doing that.  From my own unique childhood, growing up as a first generation Korean-American woman in a very homogeneous community, to the experiences I have lived through and overcome, my take on a particular style trend or the way I like doing my makeup everyday is special and unique to me and that sets me apart from everyone else.

My style is based on my love for taking classic pieces and styling them with a twist…  A fashionable mullet of sorts…  A little bit of business and a little bit of party.  This comes from my attraction to mixing fabric weights, prints, and vibes and from my “not-wanting-to-adult-crop-top-phase”; but also from having to wear business attire for my corporate job all week and wanting to still look & feel like me.


DESCRIBE YOUR AUDIENCE.
WHAT DO THEY LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR CONTENT?

My audience is primarily composed of women in the United States, ages 18–34, which makes sense because we all tend to look to our peers for guidance, support, and approval.  The comment I hear most often about my content is its uniqueness and my ability to maintain a degree of consistency.  My general taste in life, when it comes to anything – makeup, food, clothes, books, etc. – is classic with a twist, and I really think my audience resonates with that.


WHAT ARE YOUR SHORT- AND LONG-TERM
GOALS AS AN INFLUENCER?

My short-term goal as an influencer is to push myself every day.  On New Year’s Eve, I decided that my word for 2019 is “bravery,” and that word has continued to push me to step outside of my comfort zone, to work harder when I get discouraged, and to stay consistent with the small things.  My overarching and long-term goal as an influencer is to always provide value to my audience.  I am always asking my audience for feedback and opinions on what they want to see, what is helpful to them, what they like, what they need, etc., and I hope to continue to do that on a larger and larger scale.


WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE
COLLABORATION AND WHY?

My favorite collaboration is with Bella Ella Boutique, which is a local clothing boutique here in Utah, that I have an ongoing partnership with.  When they first reached out to me in December, I was ecstatic for two reasons – it is a local company and the owner single-handedly built the company from the ground up.  The company was started by a single mom, struggling to make ends meet, hustling day and night, working, living, and playing at the store, while her baby slept in the backroom.  Since then, she and her husband have opened 6 store locations throughout the state and they have a large online presence.  That resiliency in the company’s background resonates all throughout their brand and clothes, and I am grateful that they saw the same in me.


TELL US ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR BEAUTY.
WHAT WAYS HAS IT SHAPED YOUR LIFE?

I have lived and breathed beauty since I was a kid.  I was that little girl, who always sat on my mom’s bathroom counter, watching her do her makeup every day.  I would stare at her for hours on end, memorizing the products she used, how she applied them, in what order, and why she chose to do it that way.

I was the girl in elementary school that wanted to put foundation on my perfect, youthful skin that looked better without the makeup (and against my mom’s wishes), just so that I could get some practice in for the future, for when I did need it.  For every Halloween, dance event, and piano recital, I begged my mom to do my makeup for me, and I would carefully watch in the mirror in amazement at how quickly and easily the makeup would amplify my favorite features.

Still, to this day, the things I learned from my mom, sitting on her bathroom counter, are things I use in my everyday makeup routine.  I am in love with the feeling you get when you find that perfect moisturizer or night serum, the perfect foundation shade, the perfect your-lips-but-better nude.  My favorite part of it all and the reason beauty is so important to me is that my passion and love for beauty has always felt organic and innate to me.
